Considering the importance of the sustainable development worldwide, creating an EARSeL SIG group devoted to the Sustainable Development Goals of United Nations is proposed. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) includes 17 global goals set by the United Nations at the UN Summit in 2015 where the Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has been adopted.  The SDGs cover the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection addressing a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection. Earth Observation has a crucial role in achieving SDGs providing technologies for monitoring and analyzing the conditions of different environments and what is more important, today, thanks to the long term period of Earth Observation we have data for several decades. Today, we may rely on remote sensing data available for almost half a century and to detect changes occurred to the Earth surface.

Aims and Topics

This group should be focused on the field of Earth Observation for SDGs, according to the field of activities of EARSeL. This group should serve several aims:
  1. Serve as a place for exchange ideas for SDGs UN in the EARSeL framework.
  2. Serve as place for connecting people having interest about the topic and searching for partnership in initiatives and projects in it.
  3. Promoting the SDGs among students.
  4. Promoting SDGs in society.
  5. When needed, the group may coordinate or help in coordinating EARSeL activates or events connected with the SDGs.

Activities and Workshops

Information about specific activities and initiatives will be provided in this section.  As part of the SIG UN-SDG activities, 1-2 online meetings per year will be organized with the members of the group for discussing and planning initiatives, activities, ideas, etc.
